Half Price Cruise Deals, Explained Honestly

Half price cruise deals are everywhere: “50% off,” “second guest sails free,” “buy one, get one.” They can be good value. They almost never mean that your cruise costs half of what it would have cost.

Half Priced Cruise does one job: it shows what the half-price label really discounts, how to work out the saving on the whole cabin, and how to tell a genuine bargain from a big number. We do not list fares or invent offers — cruise prices change daily. When you have a real offer in front of you, our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise will price it against the alternatives for free.

What “Half Price” Usually Means

Half off one guest

Most offers cut the second guest’s cruise fare by 50%. The first guest pays full fare.

Off the fare, not the bill

Taxes, fees and port expenses are added at full price for every guest.

The Three Prices Hiding in Every Cruise

Cruise fare

The part the line discounts. Percentage offers almost always apply here, and often only to certain guests in the cabin.

Taxes, fees and port expenses

Charged per guest and generally not discounted. On short and port-heavy sailings they can be a large share of the total.

Gratuities and extras

Daily service charges, drinks, Wi-Fi and excursions sit outside the fare, unless the fare type bundles them.

A “50% off” promotion touches the first box only. That is why the saving on your final invoice is smaller than the headline. It is also why two offers with the same percentage can be worth very different amounts: the bigger the cruise fare compared with the per-guest charges, the more the percentage is worth.

Half Price Cruises: The One-Minute Test

  • Ask for the total for the cabin, with taxes, fees and port expenses, before and after the offer.
  • Check which guests the discount applies to, and whether it is the cruise fare only.
  • Check the fare type: refundable and nonrefundable fares can carry different percentages.
  • Compare the total against the same cabin type on another date or another line.
  • Add gratuities and anything you will buy anyway, then decide.

If the offer passes that test, it is a good deal, whatever it is called. If it fails, the label did the work and the price did not.

For the calendar of when cruise sales run and the full list of promotion types, CruiseSales.us is our sister site; for why some fares are cheap to begin with, see Cheapest Cruise Prices. Third and fourth guests and onboard credit are covered on Free Cruise Rewards. When you want live fares rather than explanations, Cruising for Less and Wave Season show current offers, and the Mister Cruise cruise newsletter sends new ones by email. You can browse the lines themselves on the Official Cruise Directory and the wider Official Travel Directory.

Half Price Cruise Deals: Quick Answers

Are half price cruise deals real?

The offers are real, but they rarely halve your bill. Most apply a 50% discount to one part of the price — usually the second guest’s cruise fare — while taxes, fees, port expenses and gratuities stay at full price for everyone.

How much do I actually save with 50% off the second guest?

On the cabin total, usually somewhere around a fifth to a quarter, not a half. The exact figure depends on how large the taxes, fees and port expenses are compared with the cruise fare. Our worked example shows the arithmetic.

Does the offer help a solo traveler?

Usually not. Second-guest offers need two guests in the same cabin. Solo cruisers should look at single-occupancy fares and studio cabins instead.

How do I know if the deal is good?

Compare the final total, with every charge, against the same cabin type on nearby dates or another line. A big percentage off a high starting price can still cost more than a smaller discount elsewhere.
